4 easy ways to level up your Halloween home decor

Want to know the secret to make your haunted home look Pinterest perfect? Time and thought.

Yes, it’s fun to drag out the boxes of Halloween décor and cover every surface of your home in black and orange each October.  But if you’ve ever looked around after decorating and longed for something out of a magazine, it isn’t that hard.

So before your dig into your attic, holiday closet, or storage unit, take a quick pass through these four easy ways to level up your Halloween home decor. Use one, two, or all of them to give your house a little extra spookiness this October.

Take the Halloween 2021 home tour of the Spooky Little Apartment! Today I'll show you how I created my spooky living room.

1. Pick a Focal Point

When decorating a space like a living room, it’s best to pick a focal point for your décor and build out from there. Mantles are great, but if you don’t have one consider using wall space above a couch or above/around a television. Use a large piece of décor or art to draw the eye in, then layer by placing items on bookshelves.

A focal point doesn’t have to be expensive:

  • Consider making a collage of smaller items, like Halloween cards
  • Hang items intended for front doors on a wall instead
  • Create your own art by printing a poster-sized image (Walgreens or CVS are great for this)

2. Create Vignettes

Vignettes are small collections of décor grouped together to tell or imply a story. You might group together pumpkins, ghosts, or spiders on a single shelf. You could also piece together items with a witchy feel or the makings of a mad scientist’s laboratory to create a vignette. Using this idea to limit how you display items actually opens up a world of possibilities.

Give your vignette a little something extra:

  • Mix different textures and heights to create interest
  • Group items in odd numbers

3. Light It Up

Set the mood in your home with lighting. There is something magical about a room filled with flickering orange jack-o-lantern faces and a soft purple glow. Plug-in jack-o-lanterns, flameless candles, and string lights are all easy, affordable ways to achieve this look.

4. Edit Yourself

When you’re excited about Halloween, this is arguably THE hardest thing to do! But a little self-editing goes a long way. Resist the urge to put out every last piece of décor. If something doesn’t fit well with your vignettes or focal point, pack it away again until next year.

Why this will actually make your decorating more fun:

  • It helps curate your collection so it looks more cohesive
  • It makes it that much more fun to rediscover décor the next year
