Halloween 2022 Home Tour: My Front Door

How do you decorate for Halloween when you have no outdoor space?

All October posts are part of the Countdown to Halloween!

That’s a challenge I decided to solve over the summer when my friends at Oriental Trading asked me to share some of their larger pieces of decor.

But here’s the problem: I live on the second floor of a fourplex with NO outdoor space! Just a front door that faces our interior stairwell.

That didn’t deter me though. I’m lucky enough to have a little landing (and VERY understanding neighbors), so I transformed it from my boring old front door into a haunted entrance. Follow along as I explain how I put the whole thing together.

If you have the same issue, I hope this inspires you to transform your front door as well.

[And before we dive in, I want to add that this blog post is NOT part of the sponsored content I created for them. I loved the front door look SO much that I decided it was worthy of including in my home tour this year.]

The entire set-up centered around this standing ghost girl. I decided to try and make her feel like she was standing in a haunted forest as I started adding products to my cart to use. It was a little limiting, so there is definitely a lot of room to elaborate on this in the future if I do this set-up again.

Since I wanted it to have a bit of an outdoor feel, I grabbed this faux potted tree with bats. They’re glittery (UGH!), but I liked the lighting and thought it paired with my ghost girl nicely.

Since her eyes glow red, I knew I wanted to add my own lighting in too. These lanterns were killer by her feet. I skipped adding the glass to the sides and dropped in battery-powered candles I already had. I love how this turned out, and you’ll see these lanterns reused in my living room.

Honestly, the tombstones were a throw-away item I added just in case. They have stakes that insert into the bottom and are meant to be put into the ground. I ended up using them to hide cords, which worked out perfectly!

Several years ago, I did another front door set-up for Party City and used this curtain idea for my front door. I loved how it looked and wanted to bring it back for this display too. This time, I chose off-white creepy cloth, and instead of draping lights on top, I put them under and inside the door frame to create a glow. This was really pretty at night!

To add some interest to the wall, I created a cluster of flying bats. This one was a challenge because I was limited on the product I could pick. These rubber bats were a little heavy to hang up, but thumbtacks with extra-long pins worked perfectly!

Her eyes are so fun! I could have stretched her arms out more, but I decided to leave them by her side.

And here is how the whole thing turned out! (If I could get rid of my fire extinguisher, I would!)

I really liked the simple color palette.

And here are a few night shots for the glow.

She just stole your soul…

Thanks for taking a tour of my Halloween front door!

Later this week, I’ll be sharing my living room and bedroom—two of your favorite spaces to see each year.
