Do you love Halloween AND reading? Well then, hello new BFF! We are going to get along famously.

This post was originally published in June 2018 and was last updated in August 2023. It contains affiliate links. See the end of this post and/or my disclaimer for more.

One of the many reasons I’ve always loved Halloween is it gives you the chance to dress up as anyone—or anything—you want. For one night, you could wander your neighborhood in any costume your spooky little heart desired and to me, there is something magical about being someone else for a night. Yup, I love a bit of healthy escapism.

But my very favorite way to do that has always been through books. As an English major, I’m naturally a bit of a bibliophile. I have 500+ books in my personal library housed across several very full bookshelves in my house. (See them in my past home tours.)

So when you’re a Halloween blogger, how do you combine your love of Halloween AND books?

With a Halloween book club, of course!

in early 2018, I launched The Halloween Book Club, and I was thrilled when more than 200 readers joined within the first month. As of 2023, we’re at 5,200+ members—WOW! Seems like I’m not the only one who loves Halloween and reading.

So if you love both of these things too, consider this blog post your personal invitation to join us:

About The Halloween Book Club:

The Halloween Book Club was created by me—Miranda Enzor, the girl behind spookylittlehalloween.com—in February 2018 as a way for Halloween lovers to come together and also share their love of reading! We read fiction that ranges from the classics and novels that are spooky or supernatural to horror favorites and yes, even books set on or during Halloween season.

The Halloween Book Club is hosted in a Facebook group and is open to anyone in the world. We’d love for you to join us!

As of August 2023, we’ve updated to a bimonthly reading schedule:

  • August
  • October
  • December
  • February
  • April
  • June

Occasional book reviews or book listicles may be posted on Spooky Little Halloween, so keep an eye out for them.

How The Halloween Book Club works:

We read one book every other month. I just updated this schedule from quarterly in August 2023, and I’m excited to read more with you guys. For the remainder of 2023, I will be selecting the books we read to keep things moving along.

Once the title is announced, members are given 4-6 weeks to read the chosen book. We always encourage grabbing it from your local library, local bookstore, or even a local second-hand bookstore first. Part of why we have a longer reading time is to allow members to acquire more popular titles.

Two weeks after announcing the book, I’ll post a few threads for our quick readers to discuss their fave/least fave thing about the book until we start our discussion time period. Keep in mind these may contain spoilers, so I suggest avoiding them until you’ve finished reading.

When our reading period is done, I’ll post a series of discussion questions. Members are also encouraged to start their own discussions, share insights, etc. about the book. I do not tend to be a fast-paced reader myself, so I encourage you to take your time enjoying each book and jump into the discussion when you are ready. (Hey, life happens and sometimes you don’t always finish the book, right? That’s totally okay!)

Then…we do it all over again for the next month!
